Outline: Aquatic Therapy

Here's the outline I made for Aquatic Therapy based on Kisner's Therapeutic Exercises:

Aquatic Therapy

Definition

Goals and Indications

Ø Facilitate range of motion (ROM) exercise

Ø Initiate resistance training

Ø Facilitate weight-bearing activities

Ø Enhance delivery of manual techniques4

Ø Provide three-dimensional access to the patient

Ø Facilitate cardiovascular exercise

Ø Initiate functional activity replication

Ø Minimize risk of injury or reinjury during rehabilitation

Ø Enhance patient relaxation

Precautions

Ø Fear of water

Ø Neurological Disorders

Ø Seizure

Ø Cardiac Dysfunction

Ø Small Wound and Lines

Contraindication

Ø Incipient cardiac failure and unstable angina.

Ø Respiratory dysfunction

Ø Severe peripheral vascular disease.

Ø Danger of bleeding or hemorrhage.

Ø Severe kidney disease

Ø Open wounds, colostomy, and skin infections such as tinea pedis and ringworm.

Ø Uncontrolled bowel or bladder

Ø Water and airborne infections or disease

Ø Uncontrolled seizures

Physical Properties of Water

1. Buoyancy

2. Hydrostatic Pressure

3. Viscosity

4. Surface Tension

5. Hydrodynamics

6. Thermodynamics

7. Center of Bouyancy

Aquatic Temperature

Cooler Temperature – High Intensity Exercise

Warmer Temperature- Mobility, Flexibility and Relaxation Exercise

*Ambience Temperature should be 3 degrees higher than the water temperature

Aquatic Exercises – 26 to 33 degree Celsius

Aerobic Conditioning – 26 to 28 degree Celsius

Intense Aerobic Conditioning – 22 to 26 degree Celsius
